"Where/how do I get training regarding the Immanuel approach?"
(posted: 01/26/2010 revised: 01/26/2010) An increasing number of people have been contacting us with questions along the lines of: “I would like to use the Immanuel approach to emotional healing in my _______ (psychotherapy practice, ministry, church, small group, family, marriage, etc). How/where do I get training that will enable me to do this?” Unfortunately, at this time we do not have any kind of training institute, we do not offer internships/apprenticeships, and we are not providing seminars designed to train people to use the Immanuel approach. In the absence of this kind of Immanuel approach training package, we offer the following thoughts on how to use the resources that are currently available in putting together a “do it yourself” Immanuel approach training program. "Repressed and/or dissociated traumatic memories are a real phenomena"
(posted: 07/14/2004 revised: 07/14/2004) Notes from May 2004 Evanston seminar, "Growing as a Minister of Emotional Healing: Essential Equipping from the Science of Memory and the Experience of Ministry"
As an additional resource to those who attended our May 2004 Evanston seminar, we are providing here a complete copy of our lecture notes (with a few minor edits and improvements since the seminar). These notes will obviously be most helpful to those who attended the seminar, but will hopefully also include some information that will be useful and usable even for those who were not able to attend. As you will see, some sections are fairly complete text, and other sections have a lot of holes (that we filled in during the live presentations). As we are able, we will "upgrade" these lecture notes into fully expanded, more carefully written essays.
This essay presents extensive evidence supporting the reality of repressed and/or dissociated traumatic memories. The material in this essay is especially important as context for our discussions of suggestibility, misattribution, and "false memory" (memory error/distortion).These notes are adapted from the "‘False’ Memory?" essay on our web site, with some new additional material.

This case study provides examples of many of the phenomena, principles, and tools that we discuss in the rest of the seminar.

"Stories of the Lord's Faithfulness ... Encounters with the Lord: Introduction"
(posted: 07/31/2001 revised: 07/31/2001) Guidance, Healing, Provision, Protection, Presence during suffering, Deliverance, and Unusual Encounters with the Lord."
In my (Karl's) personal spiritual journey, one of the most difficult challenges has been to hold onto faith during times of suffering. An important part of building my faith foundation has been to read a steady diet of true stories of the Lord's faithfulness. However, many people doubt the truth of stories involving any component of supernatural intervention. When the stories are about people they don't know in some country far, far away, doubt is even easier. This tendency towards skepticism was certainly a part of my own faith journey. Hearing stories from people I knew and trusted - stories about people I knew, stories that I could check - helped me grow in the belief that the Lord is real, present, loving, and that He will care for us. All of the experiences described below are from my own life or were told to me by someone I know personally. Most of these people are family members, close friends, or members of our church. Hopefully these stories of the Lord's observable protection, guidance, encouragement, answers to prayer,...etc. will help build your faith. My prayer is that you will grow to the place where you will be able to trust in His presence, love, and care, even when you cannot yet see His plan or feel His presence in the midst of whatever suffering you are facing.
This document includes a more detailed description of my own struggle with holding onto faith when encountering suffering, comments about Biblical precedent, comments about corroboration from cognitive therapy research, and discussion of concerns that people have raised regarding this project to record and share "true stories of the Lord's faithfulness."
